SPARKLING WINES and DRY ROSE (Still):
1) Domaine Comte Abbatucci “Faustine” Rose 2020, Corsica, France (still): $12 With Jean-Charles Abbatucci, it is all too easy to get entranced in geeky minutiae about forgotten grape varieties, his latest biodynamic farming innovations, and Corsican wine history. But with a cold glass of his rosé, all this cerebral trivia takes a back seat to the visceral experience of sheer pleasure. It is made from mostly Sciaccarellu grapes grown with care in granitic soils, subject to a slow, delicate pressing and cool, natural fermentation. If you could taste a Corsican breeze, it might resemble this—herbaceous, gently floral, and pleasantly salty.—Anthony Lynch
2) Domaine Huet Vouvray Petillant Brut 2019, Loire: $13 Among the great values in sparkling wine and competes in pedigree, texture and flavor with many Champagnes. Shows the true versatility of Chenin and provides endless drinking pleasure. All grapes are harvested by hand. Noel Pinguet was one of the first French winemakers to adopt biodynamic viticulture and credit biodynamics with enhancing the personalities of the estate’s terroirs. Aged for over three years this vintage sparkling wine has a fine mousse with subtle notes of mandarin and grapefruit. The palate reveals flavors of exotic fruits and spices.
3) Champagne Andre Clouet Silver Brut Nature NV, Bouzy: $14 92+ pts. / Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate(22nd Apr 2021) Clouet’s NV Silver Brut Nature Grand Cru is a pure Bouzy Pinot Noir that was disgorged without any dosage. This disgorgement displays a medium intense golden color and a complex and refined bouquet of ripe and pureed apples and discreet chalky as well as brioche aromas. The palate is elegant, straight and fresh, very pure and salty on the finish. This is a challenging Brut Nature that needs to be aged for two or three years to gain complexity and finesse and to smooth its current edges. The finish is mineral, limestone and salty but also a bit drying at this moment.
4) Champagne Christophe Mignon ADN de Meunier Rose Brut N.V., Vallee de la Marne: $18 Dark salmon color, with elegant ruby highlights, delicate and persistent ring of bubbles. Fruity powerful and enjoyable, with almonds, spices and black chocolate notes. Powerful, intense and vinous in the mouth, with forest fruits, strawberry and raspberry notes Ends with silky, pure and expressive finish. This area south of the Marne River and along the Flagot tributary is known for its high percentage of Pinot Meunier, which is particularly well suited to the deep clay and chalky Tuffeaux soils that dominate the terrain. Citrus and hints of caramel dominate the palate of this layered and extremely elegant rose.6 gr/l dosage.
WHITE WINES
6) Grieve Family Winery Double Eagle Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Napa Valley: $13 Striking aromatics hint at the intensity and verve of our 2020 Double Eagle White. Opening with fresh lemon zest and a whiff of just-baked brioche, the wine’s buoyant fruit core takes on added richness and texture on the palate, riding an elegant acid lift through the long, lively finish.
7) Terroir Historic Garnacha Blanca/Macabeu 2018, Priorat, Spain: $11 After a fateful tasting at Can Roca followed by the tasting menu, Dominik Huber became convinced that not enough attention was being paid to white wines in Priorat. Out of the dozen courses he had, only about three were suited to red wines so when he got back to Torroja he set about creating two new wines at Terroir al Limit – Terra de Cuques and Pedra de Guix. Naturally when Dominik launched Terroir Històric in 2015, the white wasn’t going to be an afterthought and it in fact represents half of his production. A blend of Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeu, the Terroir Historic Blanc is pressed whole cluster, and ferments and ages for 6 months in a 5000L concrete tank. Nothing added, nothing taken away.
8) Oceano Wines Chardonnay Spanish Springs Vineyard San Luis Obispo County 2021: $13 Smells of lemon curd, sea air, a hint of grapefruit and crushed nuts. Bright, stony flavors of lemon pith, lemon oil and a touch of yellow herbs have a nice crispness thanks to excellent acidity. There’s lemon pith-and-peel dryness on the finish with a slightly silky texture.
RED WINES
9) Cep Pinot Noir 2019, Sonoma Coast: $12 Cep Pinot noir delivers the balance and elegance you expect from de-classified barrels of Peay Vineyards’ Estate Pinot noirs. The high-toned nose captivates with raspberry/strawberry notes mingled with deeper anise and tea notes. The mouth feel is round though precise with a medium length finish brought into focus by refreshing acidity.
10) Agricola Punica Montessu Isola Dei Nuraghi 2018, Sardinia: $11 A deep violet color, the wine presents aromas of red fruits and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with black fruit flavors and soft, saline notes along with elegant traces of capers, rosemary, and black pepper. The finish is long and silky. Pair with grilled steak, lamb and spicy pasta dishes. Blend: 60% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 10% Syrah.
11) Niner Wine Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, Paso Robles: $13 The wine is rich and smooth with a full range of red fruit characteristics, brushy herbal tones, elegant tannins and a plush mouthfeel. Blend: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot.
